An Introduction to Food from Somalia

Located at the horn of Africa, Somalia has cultural influences from neighboring countries as well as Italy, which once colonized Somalia. Somali cuisine is a delectable reflection of these influences. It’s a wonderful combination of Italian, Indian, Ethiopian, Arab, and Persian cuisines and has a wide variety of flavors.

Here’s a list of some delightful Somali treats that are sure to make your dinner spread even more wild and delicious.

Canjeero

This is an airy and thick fermented pan-bread that’s considered a staple food item across Somalia. Canjeero is a Somali take on the Ethiopian Injera which is similarly-fermented bread. Since flour is the main ingredient of this bread, it’s a fulfilling dish on its own. It can also be paired with a mild-spiced beef stew to balance the floury taste.

Malawah

Malawah is a breakfast item that closely resembles the Indian paratha. It’s a traditional pancake made from flour, butter, and water and seasoned sparingly with salt. This dish is mostly eaten with tomato sauce and other savory items to give it a balanced taste.

Surbiyaan Hilib Adhi

This is a rice meal that finds its roots in Arab cuisine. This aromatic, delicious, and fulfilling dish is mostly accompanied by tender lamb. Sometimes, the lamb is replaced by goat to give it some variation.

Among other things, the rice is infused with saffron, lemon juice, and cardamom which give it a distinct flavor. It’s also complete with lots of caramelized onion mixed with the rice. This dish is famously made during festivities such as Eid.

Sambusa

Sambusa is inspired by Indian Samosa and is nearly the same in taste. This spicy, flavorful dish is a crispy, triangular pastry with a filling of vegetables such as boiled potatoes, carrots, etc. It can also be made with ground beef. This dish is a common item on the menu during the month of Ramadan and is eaten when Muslims break their fast.
