5 Reasons Why America Needs Refugees

The LIRS has warned the U.S. government about the consequences of decreasing the ceiling for refugee intake during a time of global need. There are many different reasons why we need to welcome refugees into our country, especially during one of the worst displacement crises witnessed in history.

From economic and political to practical reasons, here are some reasons why America needs refugees:

Refugees create a lot of our essentials

Whenever you use the Google app or need to search for something online, try thinking about how different things would be right now if America never welcomed refugee and co-founder of Google, Sergey Brin.

If you’re a foodie who loves Sriracha, or a gamer who spends their free time attached to the screen, you can thank refugee David Tran for his genius taste buds and Ralph Baer for the credit of inventing video games.

It’s a part of our history

The first individuals who escaped to America while seeking religious freedom relied on being welcomed as refugees. Even the words printed on the esteemed statue of liberty boast America’s reputation as land to seek refuge. Closing the doors on refugees will only show disrespect to this legacy and the American principles.

They help build the economy

According to this report, refugees earned the country $77.2 billion in 2015 in household income. They also paid around $20.9 billion in taxes, leaving them with $56.3 to spend on U.S. businesses.

America’s dynamic is based on cultural diversity

The fabric of the U.S culture has been woven with refugees for centuries. Intellectual giants and musical icons such as Albert Einstein and Regina Spektor, respectively, have become a crucial part of the American narrative. Closing the doors to refugees will only stifle this wonderful national identity.

America’s getting old

The number of working-age adults who belong to the Baby Boomer generation has been declining over the past few years, and the decline in birth rates is causing more people to be retired than the country can support. Most of the U.S refugees tend to be of working age and help boost the American society.
